McCarthy's Hauntings...

General Marquis de Lafayette

We have a few resident ghosts, some suspect up to 20, and most are unidentified. One of the most active and whom we call our "Lady of the House", we suspect to be Liesel, the daughter of George Frederick Bechtel (1762 – 1872), who was the private caretaker for General Lafayette when he was recovering in the house after suffering from wounds inflicted during the Revolutionary War. Liesel reportedly fell in love with Lafayette but, upon his recovery, he went back to France and his wife. Her unrequited love is suspected to be the reason her spirit lingers... Read more about the strange happenings at McCarthy's in this article from Bethlehem's Patch.

This is the site where General Lafayette rehabilitated from battle wounds he suffered in the Revolutionary War. According to legend, his caretaker's daughter was so in love with him that even to this day she wanders the site looking for him. Visitors have experiencing poltergeist activity, such as furniture moving and faucets turning on.
